Wolverines Play Well but Take Tough Loss to Hampton Blue in Shootout2009-02-09
Charleston traveled to Chesapeake, VA and faced off against the Hampton Whalers Blue team last weekend in SEJHL league action.
The Wolverines dropped game 1 on Saturday night 6-1. Charleston's lone goal of the night came from Sterling Brown at 7:42 in the 1st period making the score 2-1 in favor of Hampton. Taylor Paul and Spencer Morris were credited with assists. The Wolverines could not get the offense going after that, and the Whalers went on to score 4 more goals on Charleston goalie Brian Ruddy. Ruddy faced 60 shots and had 54 saves in the loss.
Charleston came out playing Sunday morning's game with a purpose and kept the score even throughout the game, eventually losing to the Whalers 6-5 in a game that went to a shootout. Josh Wall (assist by Alex Hegstrom) got the Wolverines on the scoreboard at 1:04 in the 1st period to tie the game 1-1. Hampton scored 2 early goals in the 2nd but Charleston equaled the scores with goals from Paul Rattenbury (assist from Taylor Paul) at 8:58 and an unassisted power play goal from Brennan Hill at 6:29. Hampton scored again at 6:01 in the 2nd and the Wolverines tied the score less than 1 minute later when Nathaniel Gagne scored (assit from Jonathan Perry) at 5:06. The Whalers took an early lead in the 3rd period and kept that lead until 4:22 remaining when Rattenbury scored (unassisted) his second goal of the game. The teams played a scoreless 5-minute overtime and went into the shootout where the Wolverines lost by one shot. Roy Murphy was in goal for the Wolverines. He faced 56 shots in 65 minutes of play and made 51 saves. Charleston played hard and their hard work paid off by putting the first point on to the league standings since late October.
